Report on the Timber Design Seminar 2003 by Andy Anderson
The New Zealand Timber Design Society has continued to promote the innovative use of timber by the hosting of the recent seminar “Timber Design” in Auckland. The focus of the seminar was an awareness of the opportunities of timber- engineered solutions and the respective properties of these products used.
Following the seminar was the Origin timber design awards further promoting excellence in the use of timber in the construction industry.
The focus of the seminar was to appeal to both Architects and Engineers. In doing so the topics covered were wide ranging providing an over view of the issues facing the industry today. Interestingly the views of the respective design disciplines provided food for thought to challenge the common view of the individual designers.
While the majority of the 200 plus attendees were Engineers, over 25% were Architects and there was significant representation from tertiary institution tutors, other design disciplines and local authority staff.
Feedback from the all day seminar has prompted the Society to refine the contents further suitable for presenting in other key venues around New Zealand. This is important to reach as many designers as possible. The format will allow greater time to focus on specific issues raised within the seminar forum.
From the opening address to the closing remarks the society used the day to expand the views of all attendees. The following excerpts from papers presented will provide the opportunity to share in some of the expertise that was available at this seminar. |
