Following the Meeting, Colin Nicholas gave a talk on his appointment as a Carter Holt Harvey Timber Fellow at Auckland University. Colin worked with Booth Sweetman and Wolfe for thirty years, being responsible for structural and civil design and construction supervision. During the period he designed in timber, structural steel and concrete and considers himself to be a practical designer, rather than an academic or researcher. The main objectives of his appointment were to:-
· Increase the use of N.Z. wood in building construction both locally and offshore.
· Increase the number of enthusiastic and competent designers in wood.
· Extend the forefronts of knowledge in innovative structural systems and products in wood.
· Develop a comprehensive design package which would be available to practitioners in increasing their efficiencies in the design of timber structures.
Colin listed the ways in which it was hoped that these objectives could be met at Auckland and Canterbury Universities, and reported on progress to date, and aspirations for the future.
Ken McIntosh proposed a vote of thanks to Colin for his most interesting and informative talk on what is a vital section of our drive to foster the advancement of timber design. Carried unanimously
Ken also proposed a vote of thanks to MiTek for the use of their facilities and the provision of refreshments, plus the opportunity to take a tour through their factory. Carried unanimously
