Reinforcement of timber members – practical examples
Daniel is the president of the TDS and co-editor of the TDS journal. He has worked for several years in the timber industry in Europe and is now a senior structural engineer at PTL. Daniel has a great passion for timber engineering and has led his design team to the completion to several mid-rise timber buildings in New Zealand.
Timber Floor Vibrations
Originally from Vancouver, Canada, Ben moved to New Zealand in 2019 and has been working on a mixture of projects at Holmes Consulting, including the NZ Wood Post and Beam Construction Design Guide and the CDHB Waipapa Tower 3 Project. Prior to working for Holmes Consulting, Ben worked for a timber engineering and construction company in Canada where he designed various mass timber projects in Canada and the USA.

Daniel is past President and former management committee member of TDS, TDS representative on the P3603 Standards committee, and currently employed by Simpson Strong-Tie. He is keen to use his unique engineering, marketing, and building compliance skillset, alongside his engagement with industry bodies and Standards committees to encourage and support uptake of timber in construction in NZ.
Gail joined the Holmes Consulting team in 2014 as a Structural Engineer and has experience across a broad range of sectors including residential, retail, sports, education and the public sector.

Julian Addington is a structural engineer and director of ENGCO. Over the past decade, Julian has been involved with the development of CLT & PLT in the NZ market, helping develop industry design guides and multiple timber projects. Recent projects include multi-storey full engineered timber buildings and hybrid structures featuring off-site manufacture.
Bjorn Stankowitz worked for several years in the timber industry in Europe, with a degree specialising in structural timber engineering from Germany and a strong background in building physics. He works on various multi-storey large format timber buildings and represents both Engineering New Zealand and the NZ Timber Design Society on the NZS3602 Committee.
Paul Horne practised as a structural and fire engineer for four years while undertaking his masters studies and in 2018 he returned to university to undertake his PhD studies. His PhD research is investigating the structural performance of post-tensioned timber buildings in fire. He is particularly interested in the response of connections and their implications on global structure performance.
Tim Swager is a Senior Structural Engineer from BCD Group in Tauranga who has a keen interest in timber structures. BCD Group a multi-disciplinary Consultancy with offices in Hamilton, Tauranga and New Plymouth who have designed and delivered a number of engineered timber buildings in over the last few years.

Alistair Cattanach is a Director of Dunning Thornton with over 26 years of experience in NZ and the UK. He is a passionate advocate for finding better structural forms in engineered wood products. Timber projects of note include Scion’s Te Whare Nui o Tuteata, Nelson Airport, Massey’s College of Creative Arts and the Waitomo Caves Visitor Centre.

This case study shares the project’s story and its journey to date and lessons learnt thus far in its implementation.
Sean Gledhill is a Technical Director at Beca, with 23 years’ consulting experience in NZ and across the UK, Europe and Asia. Sean’s a passionate advocate of developing low damage, innovative and resilient seismic solutions. He has expertise in delivering controlled rocking braced frames, seismic isolation and innovative connections such as optimised sliding hinge joints. Whilst the bulk of his expertise has been in structural steel, over the last couple of years he has been involved in developing mass timber project solutions utilizing Glulam and CLT in tertiary education and office building projects and looks forward to sharing some of the lessons learnt in the journey thus far.
