About the event

The Timber Design Society invite you to watch their 5th webinar of their 2023 series with David Kingham presenting on learnings from Nanyang technological University’s Gaia project, the largest mass timber building in Asia.

Learnings from Nanyang Technological University’s Gaia project, the largest mass timber building in Asia.

NTU’s recently opened “Gaia” is one of the largest wooden buildings in the world, at 42,000m2 with over 13,500m3 of CLT and glulam built in one of the wettest cities in the world. This discussion will cover the journey from design through to installation and touch on learnings regarding engineering, procurement, installation and finishing works. Steeltech were the mass timber and structural steel subcontractor and together with an international team of suppliers and subcontractors, delivered the project whilst dealing with Covid disruptions and all manner of other challenges.

Presenter Bio: David trained as structural engineer in Canterbury and has had a career mixed between contracting and design. After working with Enovate in Auckland, David moved to Singapore in 2019-2021, predominantly working on the NTU project  As a design, supply and install contract, he was responsible for the technical department which involved coordinating the design, engineering & procurement of all mass timber & steel components. As the installation of the project started in late 2020, his roll transitioned to Project Manager and has supported the project through to its recent public opening.

Alongside this, David leads the mass timber department at Steeltech Industries, covering tender packages, pre-construction & management of their ongoing timber projects. He is passionate about mass timber engineering & construction and has been lucky enough to work with some of the world leading suppliers & engineers. David’s current contracting work is split between projects and companies in Singapore, Australia and New Zealand and involves a mix of project & technical consulting on mass timber jobs.
