Beyond Utility – Part 1 and 2
Journal
Andrew Charleson
This article is the first of two in which Andrew describes several of the timber buildings he studied during his recentResearch and Study Leave in Western Europe. The focus of his trip was to study ‘non-structural’ contributions ofstructure to architecture. Each building studied, to some degree, has received architectural recognition by virtue ofbeing reviewed in an architectural publication. In all cases exposed timber structure is an indispensable and majorarchitectural component. Two religious and two commercial buildings are discussed initially, while the second articlefeatures four very different educational buildings.
