Beyond Utility – Part 1 and 2
Journal
Andrew Charleson
This article is the first of two in which Andrew describes several of the timber buildings he studied during his recent Research and Study Leave in Western Europe. The focus of his trip was to study ‘non-structural’ contributions of structure to architecture. Each building studied, to some degree, has received architectural recognition by virtue of being reviewed in an architectural publication. In all cases exposed timber structure is an indispensable and major architectural component. Two religious and two commercial buildings are discussed initially, while the second article features four very different educational buildings.
