All building projects start with the visions andaspirations of the client. Whilst projects range fromthe simple to the complex, the key to a successfuldesign outcome is a thorough understanding of theclient’s needs and aspirations, coupled with a designteam prepared to work together in a collaborativeyet challenging professional relationship. To fullyrealise the potential of the design, this collaborativeenvironment filters through main contractor andspecialist subcontractors onto the workshop floor. Arrivingat Wellington airport, there can be no doubt whereyou are.At design stage, deep understanding of the existingbuilding led to the use of exposed structural timber,with refined and deliberate detailing at connections.A wide span structure, utilising opportunities for solidelements where needed operationally to completethe structural system, and utilising ceiling beams asboth architectural element and structural system tosupport services load resulted in a fully connectedarchitectural and structural design, which supportsboth the functionality required and the aspirations ofthe client.In summary, Wellington International Airport’sTerminal South Extension Project is a celebrationof collaboration - structure and architecture as onesystem.
